Meet Dr. Yifan Lu
“Joining Macula and Retina Institute in August 2025.”
Dr. Yifan Lu grew up in Wuhan, China. She came to the United States at age of 18 years old. After graduating summa cum laude from the University of Washington with a Biochemistry major, Dr. Lu moved to Boston and earned her MD degree from Harvard Medical School. She then stayed at Harvard and completed her Ophthalmology residency and Medical Retina fellowship training at Massachusetts Eye and Ear.
Dr. Lu’s clinical interests include common retinal problems, such as macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal vascular occlusions, macular telangiectasia, central serous retinopathy, retinal tear and detachment, as well as complex uveitis diagnoses and rare inherited retinal diseases. Dr. Lu uses the latest diagnostic imaging techniques and up-to-date laser machines in her practice to provide earliest diagnosis and highest-quality treatment.
Dr. Lu is also a clinician scientist. Her research covers a range of topics, with particular focus on novel retinal imaging techniques for the diagnosis and monitoring of retinal diseases. Dr. Lu has published more than 20 peer-reviewed publications in top ophthalmology journals and presented at multiple national and international conferences. Dr. Lu has been recognized with awards such as the Jeng Liu, MD, Endowed Scholarship, SF (MNT) Fund Scholarship, Lyman Scholarship, Robert N. Chang Foundation Scholarship, Varanasi Diversity Award, and Berkelhamer Book Award.
